Instructions

    • 1

Set your font as Times New Roman or an equally common, easy to read typeface. Use size 12. Set up double spacing for the entire document. Create 1-inch margins on all four sides. Set the alignment to flush left.

    • 2

Format the header to include your last name and the page number. MLA formatted page numbering uses standard Arabic numbers.

    • 3

Skip the title page if you want to, though it may be used if necessary. Center the title on the first page, using title case. The first page should include your name, instructor's name, date and any class information. Some instructors may require a title page; ask for clarification.

    • 4

Do not add frills. Proper MLA papers have index pages. Abstracts are not required. Italics may be used sparingly for emphasis and for quoted works; underlining is not required in MLA format.

    • 5

Indent each new paragraph using the tab key or five spaces. You may use headings or subheadings for new sections, though MLA format does not require this.

    • 6

Use quotation blocks when quoting text of four lines or longer. Indent by five spaces. Using quotation marks in these blocks is not necessary. Maintain double-spacing within the block.

    • 7

Finish the paper with a Works Cited page. If you don't have an MLA style guide outlining the proper citation format, your college writing center or library may be able to assist you. For example, Calvin College in Michigan has an interactive webpage that properly formats sources of all types.

Tips & Warnings

  • Numbers one through nine should be written as words; numbers larger than 10 can be expressed as numerals.

  • If you are going to be writing a lot of MLA papers, consider purchasing an MLA handbook.

  • Avoid using slang or contractions in your writing.
