How to Look Good in Winter Clothes

In the winter, many women try to wear layers of bulky clothing in an effort to keep warm. While you might be comfortable, these layers can hide your natural shape, making you look 10 - 20 pounds heavier. There are ways to keep warm in the winter without sacrificing your sense of fashion. These can be followed by both men and women who are seeking to look their best in the cold of winter.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear thermal underwear under your clothes. This will allow you to put on fewer layers, slimming your look. Choose the thinnest brand that you can find. These are often made of synthetic fibers designed for especially cold temperatures. You might have to go to a sporting goods store in the hunting or camping clothing section for these ultra-thin thermals.

    • 2

Choose bright accessories which draw attention away from your body. You might want to invest in a stole, scarf or shawl to wrap around your shoulders or a brightly colored hat. These options will give others a different focal point when they first see you. They will also keep your neck and head warm.

    • 3

Men should wear solid color hats, and avoid those with logos or brand names on them. These look tacky and are best reserved for outdoor spectator sports.

    • 4

Both men and women should choose a scarf that is long enough to allow for you to wrap it around your neck several times and to tie it in several different ways. If your scarf is too short, it will look awkward. Opt for a simple color scheme or style with a scarf if you only have one or two to allow you to wear it with many outfits. If you have several scarves (best for women) choose bright colors as recommended in step 2.

    • 5

Wear warmer, thinner fabrics. Choose wool, cashmere, or a specialty thermal synthetic instead of linen or cotton. You will need to wear more layers of the latter to achieve the same warmth as the former. If you want to wear wool, only wear one layer of it. Wool can be bulky, but you will need to only put on one wool sweater instead of two or three cotton sweaters since wool is much warmer.

    • 6

Opt for black, especially in pants and stockings. If you want to keep warm with a short dress, wear wool or thermal stockings under it in black or a dark color to match your skirt. Black is slimming, but it also will help to direct someone's eye up to your face where you are wearing the bright wrap or hat from step 2.

    • 7

Choose a winter coat that is neither too big or too small. Try the coat on over clothing that you will typically have on underneath it. Overly large coats will make you look bigger, and small coats will show bulges, especially if the clothing underneath is bulky. Avoid wearing skiing coats over your work clothes. This will only create wrinkles in your work clothes when you take off your large overcoat.

Buy the thinnest, warmest gloves possible. Lined leather gloves that fit snugly without being too tight are a good option. Do not wear large skiing gloves to try to keep warm unless you are on the slopes. These gloves will not only make using your hands and fingers difficult, but they also make your hands look larger than they are. This can be followed by both men and women.
