It happens to everyone, even those experienced housewives. You try your best to "Shout" out every stain you see before it gets to the washer, yet when the clothes are dry and soft, you notice that mustard or grass stain you missed. It can be frustrating to see a favorite shirt or pants potentially ruined by a set-in stain. Set-in stains are notorious for being hard to remove, but with a little perseverance, it is possible.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Shout or Spray 'n' Wash Baking soda White vinegar Bleach (optional) Washing machine Storage tub, sink, or bathtub Water Laundry detergent OxiClean
  1. Step 1

Soak item in a storage tub, sink, or bathtub in hot water for 10 minutes. The hot water will relax the fibers of the clothing and allow the stain to be more easily accessed by cleaning products.

  2. Step 2

Ring out the item slightly, keeping it dripping wet. Apply Shout or Spray 'n' Wash to the stain thoroughly, and rub into the stain. Let the item sit for 10 minutes to allow the product to sink in.

  3. Step 3

Make a paste using baking soda and water. The exact amounts of each will vary, so experiment with it a little. You'll want it wet but not too thin. Thoroughly rub the paste into the stain over the Shout or Spray 'n' Wash. Let it sit for 10 more minutes.

  4. Step 4

Add white vinegar to hot water in the storage tub, sink, or bathtub, making it a half-and-half mixture. Soak the item in the mixture for 15 minutes. Remove and ring out until still wet but not dripping.

  5. Step 5

Rub what is left of the baking soda paste into the stain once more, along with Shout or Spray 'n' Wash. This will allow the product to be in abundance inside the stain during the washing process.

  6. Step 6

Run water in your washing machine, add your normal laundry detergent, bleach (if the item is white) and the recommended amount of OxiClean. Add item to the wash and let it soak for 10 minutes once the washer is filled but before it starts the wash cycle.

  7. Step 7

Examine the item for the stain. If it has been removed, dry the item as normal. If not, do not allow the item to dry, and repeat the process. Sometimes only one more run through this process is needed, so try again before giving up. It takes some time but is worth it for your favorite shirt or pant set.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure your water is always hot, as this allows the products to more thoroughly sink in and work.
  • Never use the cleaning products mentioned here on dry-clean-only or delicate fabrics, as they can damage the material. Bleach can be a dangerous irritant to your eyes and skin. Always use caution when using it.
