The Nintendo 64 is a classic cartridge-based video game console. Cartridges tend to have better durability than discs. The console has fewer mechanical parts, which adds to a longer lifespan. In addition, the games do not lag while playing and rarely freeze. However, the downside is that when the contacts on the N64 games become dirty, it can be a challenge to get them to work in the system.

Things You'll Need:

    Cleaning N64 Games

  1. Step 1

Pour some rubbing alcohol into a small container. Use the cap of the rubbing alcohol bottle if nothing else is available.

  2. Step 2

Dunk the swab into the alcohol. A small amount will be adequate.

  3. Step 3

Use the cotton swab to clean the metal contacts on the cartridge. The rubbing alcohol will remove the dust and grime on the contacts.

  4. Step 4

Wait approximately three minutes for the rubbing alcohol to dry. It will evaporate quickly.

  5. Step 5

Test the game. If it still does not run properly, the game may require additional cleaning.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your game still doesn't work after it is cleaned, you may need to clean the cartridge slot on your Nintendo 64 console. Use the rubbing alcohol and cotton swab method for this as well.
  • Be sure to check the cartridge for cotton swab fragments after you have finished cleaning the contacts. Sometimes the cotton swab can break up during the cleaning process and leave fragments inside the game.
