How to Beat Psycho Mantis
The battle with Psycho Mantis in Metal Gear Solid is notoriously tricky. Psycho Mantis has powerful psychic abilities that allow him to read your mind and anticipate your moves. He dodges any attack you use on him and is invulnerable to explosives, making him seemingly impossible to beat. The battle is infamous for frustrating and confusing first-time players. Luckily, with the right strategy it's possible to outsmart Psycho Mantis and use his weaknesses to your advantage.

Pause the game when the battle begins.

Unplug your controller from controller port 1.

Plug the controller into controller port 2. If you are playing on a PS3, assign the controller to port 2 in the PS button menu. This will prevent Psycho Mantis from reading your mind and anticipating your attacks.

Follow Psycho Mantis as he flies around the room. Punch him or shoot him with your SOCOM whenever he stops moving. Crouch to avoid damage from the flying furniture.

Punch Meryl to knock her out when Psycho Mantis takes control of her. Alternatively, you can also knock her out with a Stun Grenade.

Put on your Thermal Goggles when Psycho Mantis becomes invisible. Continue punching or shooting him until he is defeated.

Tips & Warnings
Occasionally Psycho Mantis will cause your screen to turn blank, giving the appearance of a video malfunction. Wait a few seconds and the screen will return to normal.
Do use explosives as Psycho Mantis will detonate them prematurely, causing damage to you. Do use lethal force on Meryl, as her death will result in a Mission Failed screen.
