Latin is the ancient language of the Roman Empire.The base of the five Romance languages--French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian and Spanish--Latin will come in handy if you want to learn one of them. If you plan to study biology, religion or history, you'll find Latin prevalent in each of them. You'll need time, patience, and several resources to properly learn the language.

      Find a local school that offers Latin or search online for an Internet course, which several colleges offer. See references for more information.

      While taking a course is a great way to learn the Latin language, you may want to supplement with books and/or software programs. If you do not want to pay for a class you can use just the books and software. Find books and software that offer exercises with the answer keys. You can even buy high school and college level Latin textbooks online with their accompanying workbooks, software and answer keys.Shop around until you find some materials that you feel comfortable with and then look for the best bargain.

      Once you have selected a program of study, invest in a good Latin dictionary. The dictionary will become your best friend when you start to do translations. Dictionaries are available at bookstores or online.

      It is important to study every day while learning the Latin language. Try to learn at least 5 to 10 new words a day and do a short translation. You'll lose some of the knowledge you have gained if you take long breaks

      Encourage a friend or family member to learn Latin with you. You'll have someone to study with and another person to motivate you.

      Don't become discouraged. There will be days where you will want to give up on this complex language. Know that it will take time. Be persistent and you will be able to reap the rewards of learning Latin.

  • Be wary of "free" programs offered on the Internet. Anyone can develop a site and say that it will teach you something, but it is worthless if the information is wrong. Look for courses and programs that were developed by experts in the Latin language.
