How to Rip Songs From YouTube Videos & Convert Them to MP3s

No video sites on the Internet are as well-known or popular as the video-sharing site YouTube. The quantity and variety of videos uploaded on YouTube are unsurpassed, with offerings of everything from independent movies to fan videos to live music performances. If you have found a video on YouTube with a song that you would like to keep, it is possible to rip the song from the YouTube video and convert it into an MP3 for use on your computer or portable media player.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to Zamzar (see Resources). Zamzar is a simple online file conversion service. Conversions are free, and as soon as a conversion is complete, the Zamzar system emails a copy of the converted file directly to you.

    • 2

Click on the "Download Videos" tab. Zamzar defaults to the "Convert Files" tab, but you must be on "Download Videos" to pull a video from YouTube.

    • 3

Open a new tab on your browser and go to YouTube. Search for the video of the song that you would like to rip, and when you find it, click on the video to start playing. When the video opens, select and copy the entire address in the address bar.

    • 4

Return to Zamzar and paste the URL you copied into the box in "Step 1." The available formats that the YouTube video can be converted into will populate in "Step 2."

    • 5

Choose MP3 from the list of formats. Click on the arrow by the box under "Step 2," and a drop-down menu will show all available format options in alphabetical order. This will rip only the audio file from the video and convert it into MP3.

    • 6

Enter your email address in "Step 3." This is the address where the converted MP3 file will be sent.

    • 7

Click "Convert" in "Step 4." This agrees to Zamzar's terms of service and begins the conversion process. If you would like, you can click on "terms" in Step 4 to read the terms of service before clicking "Convert." Once the conversion begins, the process can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. If you have not received the converted MP3 file in your email within 24 hours, you should try converting from the URL again.
