How to Customize a Linux Desktop

Linux is quickly proving to be a formidable opponent for Microsoft and Apple in the world of operating systems. Developed "open source," which means that anyone can contribute features to its code, Linux has become a necessity for power computer users and people who just like to get the most out of their computers. Working with Linux can seem intimidating, but everything is very easy and user-friendly. Discover how to customize your Linux desktop.

1. Boot into Linux. Whether you're dual booting between Linux and another operating system or solely running Linux on your computer, you can't do anything until your machine is turned on.

2. Change your desktop background. Whether you've got an image picked out or want to use one of the ones that come pre-installed in Linux, you can change your current background by right-clicking on your desktop and selecting the "Change Desktop Background" icon.

3. Change your desktop's theme. A theme is a series of options that are all changed at once--from desktop colors to icons to fonts. You can change your theme by clicking the "Preferences" tab in the "System" menu at the top of the Linux Desktop and selecting the "Themes" icon.

4. Change your icons and colors individually. If you don't want to use a pre-set theme, you can tweak your icons and desktop colors independent of each other. Go to "System," then "Preferences," then "Customize." Click on "Appearance" and select one of the options available to you.
