A hair texturizer is a type of relaxer that loosens natural curls and reduces frizz and puffiness, making them easier to manage and style. The curly style is maintained, but the curls are not as tight. A hair texturizer is best done on naturally curly hair that hasn't been processed or treated by any dyes or perms. If a texturizer is used on already processed hair, it can cause the hair to become very dry and brittle, even leading to breakage.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hair texturizer kit (includes texturizer and neutralizer)
  • Wide tooth comb
  • Petroleum jelly
  • Hair clips
  • Application brush
  1. Step 1

Shampoo and condition hair as usual. Towel dry. Blot out excess moisture. Comb hair to remove tangles.

  2. Step 2

Separate hair into 3 to 4 sections to make it easier to apply the texturizer. Use a hair clip to secure each section. Apply some petroleum jelly onto your scalp between each section to prevent irritation.

  3. Step 3

Starting from the bottom section, take a 3/4 inch-wide strand of hair and apply the texturizer using the application brush. Continue until all of the strands have been covered with the texturizer. Optional: Comb the strand of hair while the texturizer is processing for a straighter look.

  4. Step 4

Leave on the texturizer for 15 to 20 minutes on naturally curly hair. For permed hair, only leave it on for 10 minutes. Do not exceed 25 minutes.

  5. Step 5

Completely rinse out the texturizer by standing under running water for at least 5 minutes. Towel dry hair. Make sure to wring out excess moisture.

  6. Step 6

Apply the neutralizer in the same manner as the texturizer. Comb through gently to make sure that every strand is covered. Leave it on for 10 minutes.

  7. Step 7

Thoroughly rinse out the neutralizer for at least 5 minutes, then apply a conditioner to keep locks soft. Towel dry hair and style as usual.

Tips & Warnings
  • If it's your first time using a hair texturizer, have it done by a professional for best results. During regrowth application, only apply the texturizer to the area with the hair regrowth; usually at the root.
  • Don't wash your hair for at least 48 hours after full application to allow the bonds to set.
