How to Remove Brake Dust Shields

Brake dust shields are inserted on the inside of wheels to prevent their discoloration from brake dust that gets emitted from disc brakes. They are vented with a directional pattern, so they won't trap the heat of the brakes in the wheels. Brake dust shields are designed to fit the wheels with a matching bolt pattern for the lugs, and can be easily installed or removed.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

• Floor jack
• Jack stand
• Lug wrench
• Torque wrench
• Socket

1. Remove the hub cap and loosen the lug nuts or studs on the wheel you're removing the brake dust shield from.

2. Lift the vehicle using the floor jack near the quarter panel of the wheel you're removing the brake dust shield from. Secure the vehicle on a jack stand.

3. Finish removing the lug nuts or studs, and then remove the wheel.

4. Remove the brake dust shield from the inside of the wheel rim. Some shields may require pushing the shield out of the rim from the outside section of the rim, such as poking a finger or your hand through a space in the rim.

5. Replace the wheel onto the knuckle of the vehicle and then thread on the lug nuts or lug studs. Tighten them snugly.

6. Lift the vehicle high enough to remove the jack stand and then lower the vehicle to the ground.

7. Tighten the lug nuts or lug studs securely using the torque wrench (preset with the correct wheel nut torque specifications for the vehicle) and a socket.
