Depending on the type of fireplace you have and the type of wood you burn, you may have to clean the glass on your fireplace after every fire. The newer fireplaces have an air-wash system that sends the air down the front of the door to keep the smoke and soot from getting to the glass. The older ones don't, however. Sometimes the hardest part of cleaning the glass is getting to it. Folding doors almost always have to be taken off the fireplace to clean them. The best tip is, the more frequently you clean the glass, the easier it is.
Things You'll Need
- Fireplace glass cleaner
- White vinegar
- Spray bottle
- Paper towels
- Old blanket
- Razor blade
Read the manufacturer's directions on cleaning the glass if it is still under warranty. Using anything to clean the glass that is not recommended will void the warranty and you will have no recourse with the manufacturer if you find the glass or door system is defective.
Remove the doors and place them flat on an old blanket if you cannot effectively reach them while they are attached. Make sure the doors are cool before cleaning or removing.
Place some fireplace glass cleaner on a clean, soft rag and rub on the glass in a circular motion. Cover all the glass on the doors and allow the paste to dry.
Wipe the dried paste off with clean paper towels. If any dirt or soot is left remaining on the glass, repeat the cleaning procedure in those areas.
Make a 1 part white vinegar to 1 part water solution and pour into a spray bottle. Spray on the glass after cleaning and wipe off with a paper towel. This will remove any residue left from the soot or the cleaner. Reattach the doors to the fireplace.
