Hemorrhoids are a type of varicose vein, which is a swollen blood vessel. Hemorrhoids may be as small a raisin or as large as a grape. They may be both itchy and painful and may protrude outside of the body. Hemorrhoids commonly occur during pregnancy because of increased pressure on the veins while carrying a baby.

Eat a diet high in fiber and drink at least eight glasses of water daily to help avoid constipation, which can make hemorrhoids worse.
