Job postings are the most used method of reaching out to prospective job seekers. Newspaper ads can help businesses reach out to a very specific audience but there is added cost and limited space. Below is a guide to help you place a job ad in a newspaper.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make a list of the basic facts that you would like to include in the newspaper ad for your job posting.

  2. Step 2

Determine your budget for the ad. This will help you figure out how much information you will be able to include and what type of ad you will place.

  3. Step 3

Determine which newspapers you will use for the ad placement. Think about the audience you seek and find a newspaper that will be far reaching to such an audience.

  4. Step 4

Find out from the newspaper the different types of ad placements they offer and the rates for the placements.

  5. Step 5

Once you have determined your budget and the type of ad you will be purchasing, you will need to choose a title for your ad. Generally, the title needs to be short and to the point. You may need to abbreviate some words in order to fit it in the space provided. If your company has an unusual name for the job you may need to change it to a more generic title in order to capture the audience you seek.

  6. Step 6

Write a short paragraph about the job details and qualifications. This could be done with bullet points or a few short lines.

  7. Step 7

Write the method of employment application that you want the job seekers to follow. This could be as simple as a fax number, an email address, a mailing address, or a website. Think carefully about what method you choose as you may get inundated with resumes.

  8. Step 8

Review your completed ad and edit it accordingly. If you have too much then try abbreviating some basic words. For example, Full Time could be written as FT. On the flip side, if you still have room for more, consider adding enticing information such as "Full Benefits Package."

  9. Step 9

Get the required approval from your management staff and then submit the ad to the newspaper.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep a copy of the ad for your job posting files and for future use.
