Spring has started, and the fleas are back. Here are some easy things to do to get rid of fleas in your home.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • pet shampoo
  • flea comb
  • peppermint oil
  • borax washing powders
  • vacuum
  • small spray bottle
  1. Step 1

Most likely if you have fleas, you have pets. The first thing that has to be done is to treat the pets, so the house is not infested as soon as the fleas are gone. The best way to get rid of the fleas on pets is to use a gentle flea shampoo. I like to use pet products that aren't loaded with harsh chemicals. Wash your pet (cats or dogs) and comb out their hair with a flea comb. The cats will hate the bath, but they will love the combing. You should only have to wash them once, but get in the habit of combing their hair at least twice a week. If you do it every day it is even better because you have to break the fleas' life cycle. The first time you comb them with the flea comb expect to be grossed out by the amount of flea eggs that you pull off of your pet. If you can keep the fleas from reproducing on your pets, then you've won the first battle. One other thing that helps is to take peppermint oil - like you make candy with - and put a little bit on your hands. Rub it lightly across the animal's fur, so the scent gets on it. Don't pour it on the pet, just rub a little bit across the top of the fur. Fleas don't like the scent. It serves two purposes, it gets rid of fleas, and makes your pet smell good.

  2. Step 2

Next, you have to break the flea cycle in the house. It will take a few weeks. Lightly sprinkle borax across the carpets and floors. Let it sit there for a few hours. The fleas eat it and it kills them. After a few hours, vacuum the floors, carpets and furniture. Get in the habit of vacuuming every day, dumping out what was vacuumed up and immediately take it out of the house. Strip any beds that the pets sleep in, wash the bedding in soapy water - preferrably in hot water. You will have to be vigilant for several weeks to get rid of the fleas, but it will work.

  3. Step 3

    Other things that help are:
-moping the floor with soapy water every day
-sprinkle peppermint oil across door jams
-mix up some peppermint oil into water and wipe down sofas and mop across carpets or floors
-get some guinneas for your yard. They love to eat fleas and ticks, and they serve as great watch animals. If anyone or anything comes in your yard they sound the alarm.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure that, if you use peppermint oil on your pets, that it is the edible kind for foods because you know that they will lick themselves. Also, be careful to keep peppermint oil out of pets eyes and face.
