Instructions

    • 1

Fold the 2-yard piece of mesh fabric in half lengthwise, then widthwise. Each layer will represent one-fourth of the poncho.

    • 2

Prepare to make the opening for your head. Measure the circumference of your head. Divide this number by 4. For example, a measurement of 16 inches would yield 4 inches. This number will be used to illustrate the following steps.

    • 3

From the folded corner of the mesh fabric, the corner that has no open edges, measure down 4 inches. Mark the location with a straight pin.

    • 4

From the same folded corner, measure 4 inches across the top of the edge. Mark the location with a straight pin.

    • 5

Cut from one straight pin to the other to make a rounded edge, as if cutting along a quarter of a circle. When the fabric is opened, there will be a round opening in the middle.

    • 6

Zigzag stitch or serge the edge of the neck opening. Fold the curved edge over on the wrong side, then iron it and pin in place.

    • 7

Sew the hem of the neck down, all the way around the curved edge.

From the bottom hem, at the folded corner, cut diagonally up. Hem. For a rounded look, curve the corners of your poncho. For a closed poncho, sew the two sides closed, leaving openings for your hands.
