Binding a book is the process by which a multipage document is fastened together. Book binding requires some specialized equipment, which ranges in price. The most common types of binding found in offices are comb binding, spiral binding and double wire binding. These methods of binding create a document which is easy to navigate. Binding machines can be manual or electric. They may also be limited to one type of binding or be able to bind in several different fashions.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Book binding machine
  • Binding combs or double wire
  • Multipage document
  1. Step 1

Arrange your document and double check the order of the pages. Make sure the edges are aligned evenly.

  2. Step 2

Insert the side of the document to be bound into the binding machine and align with the stop pad. Pull the handle down. This will punch the necessary holes in the document so that it can be bound.

  3. Step 3

For a comb binding machine, return the handle to the starting position and remove the document from the machine.

  4. Step 4

Align the binding comb with the spines of the machine according to the manufacturer's instructions. Pull the opening lever or handle to open the comb.

  5. Step 5

Align the holes on the document on the spines of the comb, and return the opening lever or handle to the starting position to bind the document.

  6. Step 6

For a double wire binding machine, follow Steps 1 and 2 to perforate your document. Then insert the wire into the wire holder, align the perforations on the spines and insert the document, wire side down, into the crimping channel. Pull the crimping level to close the binding.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check your binding machine to see what types of binding it can perform. While some binding such as comb binding is reversible, other methods are not. Pay attention to the paper capacity of your machine, as most noncommercial machines have a page limit.
  • Always observe caution when using binding equipment. Keep any loose clothing or hair away from the machine.
