Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Once your quilt is layered and basted, mark your quilting pattern with a washable marker, available at quilting or craft stores.

  2. Step 2

Put a darning foot on your sewing machine and start quilting from the center of the quilt. You can use a hoop or hold the quilt firmly with both hands as you work. Start with a long strand of thread (at least 6 inches) from the bobbin and spool so you can tie them off.

  3. Step 3

Hold the presser foot down and sew steadily as you move your quilt constantly to get an even stitch. This takes practice to be able to make your stitches just the right length as you quilt.

  4. Step 4

Work from the inside out. You can use a combination of free-hand and machine guided quilting if you want to make straight lines as well as other patterns.

  5. Step 5

Leave at least 6 inches of thread when you finish quilting. Pull thread through to one side, and make a few knots before cutting the thread. Tie off the other end of the thread as well.
