  1. Step 1

    Purchase a chemical paint stripper.

  2. Step 2

Read the directions carefully and heed all warnings and cautions.

  3. Step 3

Remove the body panel if possible and put it on a stand.

  4. Step 4

Apply the stripper liberally with a brush.

  5. Step 5

Cover the area with clear plastic. The plastic keeps the fumes in and causes the stripper to work quicker.

  6. Step 6

Wait about 20 minutes (this may vary according to the brand of stripper).

  7. Step 7

Remove the plastic and scrape the paint off with a plastic paint scraper or putty knife.

  8. Step 8

Rinse the panel with cool water to neutralize the stripper.

  9. Step 9

    Sand or re-strip.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you can't remove the area you want to strip, mask off areas you don't want affected with masking tape and plastic.
  • Paint stripper is caustic. Wear gloves, and eye and breathing protection while working with it.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area.
  • Minimize contact with skin. Rinse stripper off immediately with cool water.
