Low Cost Health Care

During these difficult economic times, more and more individuals find themselves seeking low cost health care options. With rising unemployment rates and lower household income, affordable health care coverage seems to be out of reach. Some individuals can take advantage of the 65% reduction in COBRA payments as a result of President Obama signing the American Recovery Reinvestment Act. Unfortunately, that does not help individuals who were laid off prior to 9/1/2008. If you are looking for low cost health care options and cannot take advantage of the COBRA savings, below are a few programs to consider.

Visit the US Dept of Health and Human Services Community Health Center Locator. The Community Health Center Locator searches for health care centers that are funded by the Federal government. These centers serve low income individuals who do not have health insurance and cannot afford monthly health insurance premiums. Individuals pay for services based on income. In other words, participants pay what they can afford for medical treatment which includes, but are not limited to pregnancy care, childhood immunizations, dental care and more.

Take advantage of the Elder Care Locator. This service provided by the US Administration on Aging helps older individuals (generally age 60 and over) find affordable health care services such as transportation, caregiver support, meals and home care. The goal is to help older individuals by offering community services to ease the strain on family members and to assist in keeping older citizens in maintaining an independent lifestyle.

Avail yourself of the local Hill-Burton Free and Reduced Cost Health Care facility. As of this writing there are 217 facilities that offer free or reduced cost health care throughout the United States (unfortunately, there are no facilities available in Indiana, Nebraska, Nevada, Rhode Island, Utah, Wyoming). Individuals using these facilities pay based upon income. After locating a facility, you must complete the eligibility form and provide documentation as proof of income.
