How to Teach Children to Appreciate Each Day

How to Teach Children to Appreciate Each Daythumbnail
Teach your kids to have a positive attitude.

Today's high-tech world appeals to kids, who love to get a new gadget or spend the day at an amusement park. They may not have the same appreciation for the simpler things in life, and can feel that a day that's not devoted to special activities is kind of boring. Parents can teach their children to appreciate life no matter what happens. To do so, you will need to take time at the end of each day and recount all of the positive things that occurred in your child's day.

Ask your child what she is looking forward to during the day each morning. You can do this at breakfast or in the car on the way to school. Ask for details and reasons. For example, if your child says she is looking forward to recess today, ask what she wants to do at recess and what's going to make this recess special.

Have your child write about her day in a journal after school. This can be a simple 10-minute activity. Let her jot down quick bullet points if she doesn't feel like writing so the activity does not become a chore. Give your child crayons, gel pens or construction paper to illustrate her day to make it fun.

Go around the table at dinner and have each family member say what the low point and highlights of his day was. Teaching your children that it's OK not to have perfect days, but that they should always remember the good things, will help them develop a positive attitude.

Set aside time each month for your children to volunteer with less fortunate kids or young adults. Showing them what others don't have will help them appreciate what they do have.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Your kids may not understand the purpose of appreciating each day at a young age, but learning to stay positive may help them gain this understanding over time.

    • Stay positive when engaging in conversations around your kids. If you always have negative conversations or appear to be stressed over life's challenges, this may impact their view on life.
