How to Convert Windows Media Player File to Quicktime
If your computer uses the Quicktime media player (which most Macs use), you can find it hard to play files for the Windows Media Player. While Quicktime's Flip4Mac plug-in can allow it to play some Windows Media files, some are still unreadable. In this case you'll need to convert the files' WMV format into one that works with Quicktime, like MPEG. A video conversion program is needed to change Windows Media files into a Quicktime-friendly format.

1
Download and install a video conversion program onto your computer. WinAVI Video Converter and YASA MPEG Encoder are two programs that have free downloads available, although they are only trial downloads, meaning you will eventually need to purchase the full program.
-
2
Open up your conversion program. Each program can vary in its precise conversion procedures, so research and read over every tutorial you can find for your particular software.

3
Set the program to convert files to MPEG. Use the program's "Output," "Profile" or "Add task" command and, in the widow that appears, you'll see a drop-down box with the available formats. Select an MPEG format to convert to; MPEG1 is usually the best one.
-
4
Import your Windows Media files to the converter program by using its "Import" or "Add file" command. In the search window that comes up, search through the folders on your hard drive to find the files and then click the "Add" or "Import" button to make the files appear in the main window within the program.

5
Select where on the computer you will save the Quicktime files to with the the "Output" or "Destination" option. A similar search window will appear. Choose to save the file onto the desktop or in any folder within the hard drive that you want.
-
6
Start converting the Windows Media file by clicking the "Convert" or "OK" button on the main window. Please note that converting to MPEG format takes a long time -- usually four times the actual length of the movie file.
-
7
Locate the converted MPEG file in the location it was saved in and open it. If Quicktime is your computer's default media program, the file will automatically open in Quicktime.
