Depending on where you live, starting a wake-up call business can be very profitable. Because of the many computer software programs available, it is possible to start an automated business that will basically run itself. Special skills required in order to be successful include an attention to detail, an ability to network in various social situations, and the ability to maintain accurate and up-to-date records. Those who have a need for wake-up call services include businesspeople; those on vacation; those who need reminders of important events; and businesses such as hotels that offer wake-up call services but who want to outsource this work.

How to Start a Wake-Up Call Business

  1. Step 1

Research local markets to see if there is a need for your services. Those living in large urban areas may find it easier to start this kind of business. If there are one or more wake-up services in your area, you may not find enough business to stay profitable.

  2. Step 2

Create a business plan for your wake-up call business. This plan should include start-up costs, marketing costs and general overhead for your first year.
Start-up costs may include additional phones and phone lines, VOIP, computer software that allows you to create detailed spreadsheets, automated message software and monthly Internet access. Marketing costs include all print, radio, Internet (website) and television advertisements promoting your wake-up call service. General overhead costs may include payroll taxes if you hire employees, health insurance, business insurance and any other yearly or bi-yearly costs.

  3. Step 3

Create a marketing plan that promotes your service to businesspeople and others that need a daily or periodic wake-up call. Contact local businesses such as hotels, conference centers, corporations, luxury apartment complexes or other businesses that offer concierge services. Create a brochure that highlights the benefits and features of your service.

  4. Step 4

Decide whether you want to personally call people on your list each day or if you want to send an automated message. To send automated messages to those on your client list, you will have to invest in specialized software.

  5. Step 5

Attend local networking events that cater to those who would be the most interested in your wake-up call business. Hand out business cards and other information to build a client base.

Tips & Warnings
  • Sell your services to luxury hotels and high-end apartment complexes and condominiums that offer wake-up calls and other concierge services. Outsourcing this type of service is commonplace.
