Breathe Better with Asthma

Asthma is a common problem for both children and adults. You should always work with and consult your physician to treat asthma. However here are some ways to breathe better with asthma to use in conjunction with professional medical care.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make a diary or log of your asthma attacks and what you did and ate at those times. In many cases asthma attacks may be worsened or triggered by allergies. If you can note a pattern such as eating chocolate during most of your worst attacks you may consider eliminating chocolate from your diet and seeing if that minimizes the attacks.

  2. Step 2

Try to stay indoors when your local air district states that it is bad air quality or when pollen is at its highest.

  3. Step 3

Try eating fish such as tuna or salmon twice a week. Many times these foods can reduce the body's inflammation reaction which can reduce the severity of asthma attacks in many cases.

  4. Step 4

Make sure to switch on the bathroom fan frequently to maximize ventilation and thus minimize mold which is a common trigger for asthma.

  5. Step 5

Wash pets weekly to reduce dead skin and dander on them which can be a trigger.

  6. Step 6

Open the windows when you cook because strong food odors can cause trigger asthma by irritating the throat and other airways.

  7. Step 7

    Replace filters frequently.

  8. Step 8

Eat onions and apples frequently because they have flavonoids which can in some cases reduce the frequency of attacks.

  9. Step 9

Increase the magnesium in your diet to help reduce the spasm affect of asthma although make sure to talk with your doctor prior to doing this and especially if you have heart or kidney problems.

  10. Step 10

Exercise as much as possible and keep at a healthy weight. Both of these can minimize attacks.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take up a wind instrument to develop your lungs
  • Wash hand often to minimize respiratory illnesses
  • Think twice about aspirin because this can be a trigger for asthma in some cases
