How to Use a Computer RAR Subtitles File

RAR is a file format used for the WinRAR compression/archive utility software. It's best to think of an RAR file as a container that holds a larger, more compressed file. You need to "unpack" the file in order to open it. RAR files are very much like the popular ZIP but have the advantage of split volumes, allowing you to take one large file and break it down into multiple smaller files.

Instructions

  1. Unpack an RAR File

    • 1

Download and install WinRAR from the RARLab website. The link is provided in "Additional Resources," below.

    • 2

Click "Start" and select "Programs." Select the WinRAR folder and then WinRAR to start the program.

    • 3

Click "File" and select "Open Archive."

    • 4

Navigate to the RAR file you wish to unpack. Select the file and click "Open."

    • 5

Select the "Extract To" icon and specify a destination for the unpacked file. Click "OK."

    • 6

Navigate to the destination specified to find your unpacked file.

    Create a RAR Archive File

    • 7

Download and install WinRAR from the RARLab website if not already installed.

    • 8

Select the Folder, File or group of Files to be added to the archive.

    • 9

Right-click the selected files and select "Add to Archive."

    • 10

Enter a name for the Archive file. Click "OK" to create the archive.

    • 11

Optional: If you wish to span multiple volumes (ideal for large files), click the drop-down menu under "Split to volumes" and pick a size before clicking "OK."

Tips & Warnings

  • Files that span multiple volumes can be identified by a file extension; for example, .R00 or .R01. To open a RAR file split into multiple volumes, follow the normal steps but use .R00 in place of .RAR as the file to open.
