How to Make Bubble Letters in Photoshop

If you want to be a graphic designer, even as an amateur, one program that you are going to have to get very familiar with is Adobe Photoshop. You can create all kinds of visual effects, shapes and colors in Photoshop. When you are creating a fun design, you might like to add some bubble letters for your wording, where the words appear as outlines with the inside blank or filled with a different color than the color of the outline that you chose. There are a couple of different ways to create this cool effect.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the text tool on your Photoshop toolbar, then click the workspace. Type in your message. Take your time to look over the wording to assure that it is final, because after the next step you will not be able to edit it. Assure that the wording appears exactly as you want it to look when the design is complete. Change the font style to bold.

    • 2

Right-click the text layer that you just created, and click "Rasterize Layer." This will turn your editable text into a shape that can be manipulated.

    • 3

Use the magic wand tool to select the outline of your wording. Create a new layer ("Layer" and "New" on the menu) then select "Edit" and "Stroke." Stroke allows you to make an outline of the wording. Select the color that you would like for the outline of your bubble letters and how thick it should be in pixels, then select "OK."

    • 4

Make the rasterized text layer invisible (the one you first created) by clicking the eye icon on your "Layers" window or simply delete it. All that you should be able to see now is your text in bubble letters--the outline of your words. Position your bubble letters on screen to go best with your design.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you need to change your text in any way, you will need to delete your bubble letters and start over from Step 1. You can, however, adjust the size of your bubble letters without starting over by selecting "Edit," "Transform" and "Scale" on your menu. As an alternative, you can also select your text before rasterizing it and choose a bubble font to make bubble letters in Photoshop. Three popular bubble fonts include Tiffy, Write Off Outline and Wham. You can fill in your bubble letters with a different color by using the magic wand again. While on magic wand, select the inside of one of the letters. This should select all letters and the workspace. Go to "Select" and "Inverse," which will select only the inside of your bubble letters. Click "Edit" and "Fill" to fill the letters with the color of your choice.
