      Go online to the Microsoft Office Template Download Center (see Resources section). Navigate down the page until you reach the Browse Template section. Click "Newsletters." Go to the left column and click the "Filter by Product" drop-down menu. Select "Word."

      Browse through the available newsletter templates. There are numerous types of templates for family and personal use, as well as for different types of small businesses. Find a newsletter template that best suits your needs; you can always adjust colors and other details later, so find an appropriate layout and framework.

      Click the title of your chosen template. Carefully check the larger preview image to make sure that this is the template you want. Once you are satisfied, click the "Download" button and agree to Microsoft's terms of service. When the template begins to download, save the file to an easy to remember location on your computer.

      Open Microsoft Word. Go to the Office button on the top left corner and select "New." Click "New from existing" and navigate to the template file you just downloaded to your computer. Click "OK."

      Click on an object to change its color. You should see a border around the object. Go to the main navigation menu at the top of Word and click "Format." Select "Borders and Shading" and click the "Color" drop-down menu in the "Fill" section. Select the color you want to use for the object. Repeat this process for any other objects in your newsletter.

      Double-click the title, heading, sub-heading or text area on your newsletter template to input text. The template will immediately clear the text box and you can start typing in your own custom text.

      Change the colors of your newsletter's text by highlighting the text and going to "Format" in the navigation menu. Select "Font" and click the "Font color" drop-down menu too select the color you wish to use.

      Click text boxes, photo boxes or any other object in your newsletter to resize them. A border will appear around the object. Navigate your mouse to one of the object corners, and then click and drag the object to the size you want.
