Peanut butter icing is the perfect choice for chocolate cake or brownies. There is something about the combination of peanut butter and chocolate that seems to please the palate. Making homemade peanut butter icing is quite simple. It's really an adaption of butter icing. Once you have tasted peanut butter icing, you may never use butter icing again.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 stick of butter, softened
  • 1 cup of creamy style peanut butter
  • 4 tbsp. of half-and-half
  • 2 1/4 cups of confectionery sugar
  • 1 tsp. of vanilla

How to Make Homemade Peanut Butter Icing

  1. Step 1

Soften the stick of butter in the microwave for 10 seconds. Do not heat any longer or it will melt. If it has a foil wrapping, remove the wrapping first.

  2. Step 2

Mix butter and peanut butter together in a medium-sized bowl with an electric mixer. Once the ingredients are blended, put the mixer on medium-high speed and beat until well blended. Add vanilla and continue to blend.

  3. Step 3

Add the confectionery sugar alternately with the half-and-half. With the mixer on low speed, slowly add the confectionery sugar. As it thickens, add a small amount of the half-and-half. Continue until you have added all the ingredients.

  4. Step 4

Set the mixer on high speed and mix the icing until fluffy. If it is too thick, add a little more of the half-and-half. If it is too thin, add a little more of the confectionery sugar.

  5. Step 5

Frost the cake or brownies. Make sure the cake or brownies are cool before frosting. Brush off loose crumbs. Dip a wide knife in warm water and begin to spread the frosting. The warm water helps smooth the frosting on.

Tips & Warnings
  • Sprinkle peanut butter chips on top of the frosting. You can use whole milk instead of the half-and-half.
  • Do not frost the cake or brownies when warm or the icing will melt.
