Things You'll Need:
- Your favorite rolled sugar cookie recipe (plus all ingredients and utensils)
- Wire rack
- Valentine-shaped cookie cutters
- White frosting
- Small bowls
- Frosting spatula
- Small knife
- Red food coloring
- Pastry coupler
- Pastry bag
- Decorating tips
- Red and pink sprinkles
- Chocolate and other candy
- Red and pink coarse sugar
- Egg yolk
-
Step 1
Bake one dozen heart-shaped sugar cookies and cool them completely on a wire rack.
-
Step 2
Fill two bowls with 3 tbsps. of white frosting each. Add one drop of red food coloring to the first bowl of white frosting to make pink icing. Add three to four drops of red food coloring to the second bowl of white frosting to make deep red icing. Then use a frosting spatula or small knife to ice the cookies, spreading the frosting colors on your cookies in various thicknesses and patterns.
-
Step 3
Mix up the same pink and red frosting colors as mentioned in Step 2. But instead of icing your cookies with the knife, make designs on them using a pastry coupler, pastry bag and various decorating tips. Outline your cookies with hearts. Fill in some of the heart shapes with red frosting and some with pink icing for variation. Create small heart designs on each cookie, or write, "I Love You" across the tops. Experiment with the different decorating tips that attach to your pastry coupler.
-
Step 4
Once you've iced your cookies with red and pink frosting, add sprinkles, red hots and other candy treats to the tops of your cookies. Put red sprinkles on pink-frosted cookies and pink sprinkles on red-frosted cookies. Add your significant other's favorite chocolate to the top of some of the cookies for an added "I love you."
-
Step 5
Sprinkle red and pink coarse sugar on top of plain or iced cookies for a dusted effect. Red coarse sugar looks festive on pink-frosted cookies, while pink coarse sugar is a nice touch on red-frosted cookies.
-
Step 6
Try this fifth decorating technique on cookies before you place them in the oven. Before baking, beat one egg yolk and one drop of red food coloring together in a small dish to achieve a pink-colored mixture. Then use a small frosting spatula to spread the liquid egg mixture over the tops of your cookies like you were painting. Bake your cookies according to your recipe's instructions. When you remove your cookies from the oven, the egg mixture will have hardened into a smooth, pink, glaze-like icing. If you wish to "paint" your cookies with red icing instead of or in addition to the pink icing, simply add more food coloring to the egg yolk when first beating the mixture.
