How to Tie Skating Shoes

Whether you figure skate, roller blade or play ice hockey, tight laces are the key to good form. Although all skaters pull their laces while tying them, the secret to tight laces is a good lacing technique. One lacing technique is lock lacing, which is described below.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert laces into the bottom eyelets of skating shoes, moving from the inside outward.

    • 2

Check to ensure that the two resulting laces are the same length.

    • 3

Cross the two laces and pull to tighten. Then thread each lace into the eyelet on the opposite side, again moving from the inside outward.

    • 4

Repeat Step 3 until you reach the second pair of eyelets from the top.

    • 5

Instead of crossing the laces, put each lace into the corresponding top eyelet, from the outside inward. The laces should form two vertical lines instead of the typical "x" shape.

    • 6

Cross the laces and tighten. Then thread each lace under the vertical line on the opposite side.

    • 7

Tie laces in a typical bow, tightening at each step.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use waxed laces for a tighter fit. Some skaters prefer the laces to be tighter on top and looser on the bottom, or vice versa. Experiment to see which method works for you.
