Get Rid of Fleas in the House

Fleas can be a major problem in a home, but with a bit of effort you can get rid of them and more importantly the irritating bites they give you.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First look at your pets, after all they re the most likely source of fleas. Unless you get the fleas off the dog getting them out of the house won't matter because they will just come back. The first step is to get a flea comb. These are fairly simple to use. You start with your pet's head near the ears and run the comb quickly through the hair. Now, very quickly, you dip the comb into a bowl with dish soap and a bit of water. This will typically kill the fleas. Repeat as long as possible.

  2. Step 2

Next start a flea control program for your pet. There are several products to spray on your pet, and the old standby of a flea collar. Another option that I have found very good and less irritating to my dog is Frontline. You basically squeeze it from a tube onto the back of your pet's neck. It will typically last for a few weeks or more.

  3. Step 3

Now get all the bedding in your home, throw rugs, and mats and wash them in hot water with plenty of soap to kill any fleas that may by on them.

  4. Step 4

Next get your vacuum and vacuum the entire house. Then take the vacuum bag out and soak it in a pail of water and soap. This will help kill the fleas that got sucked into the vacuum bag before they can escape. Repeat twice.

  5. Step 5

Now remove animals from the home and sprinkle flea power inside cushions, along the wall, and on carpet. Leave there for a bit and then use a rough brush to scratch it into the carpet.

  6. Step 6

Now replace the carpets, bedding, and rugs. Next spray all the carpets, rugs, floors, and areas that your pet sleeps with a flea spray.

Tips & Warnings
  • You may want to look for products that contain IGR which is insect growth regular which is basically birth control for fleas.
  • You may want to set off a flea bomb under your house or spray under your house to kill any fleas hiding there.
  • You also may consider spraying the yard and garden (particularly where the pet sleeps and dark ares) to minimize the chance that your pet will go outside and get fleas again or bring fleas into the home.
  • Realize that a couple weeks after the initial treatment you may need to repeat it to get the fleas that were in the pupal stage during the first treatment.
  • Please remember to reapply flea treatment to your pet periodically and vacuum often to help prevent reinfestation.
