How to Reglaze Tile
Fresh glaze on your kitchen or bathroom tile can brighten and enliven dull flooring. Restoring your tile via a reglazing job is much less costly than remodeling. You can do it yourself with in a minimum amount of time and only a few tools. Learning how to apply a new glaze is relatively simple. Taking your time and following a few simple steps can lead to a near professional appearing result.

- Silicone digester
- Acid paste
- Degreaser
- Epoxy primer
- Acrylic-urethane resin
- Polyurethane coating product
- Gloves
- Lint-free white cloths

Take off caulking with a silicone digester available for home improvement stores. You need to get rid of all traces of the caulking because it will contaminate your new glaze and ruin its appearance.

Etch with acid paste if you have old porcelain tiles. The etching will get your tiling ready to accept the glazing. Take care while you work with the acid paste by wearing gloves and working slowly so as not to get the paste on areas you don't want it on.

Clean with a degreaser to remove all traces of contaminating particles. Go over the entire surface you will be reglazing and allow time to dry before moving on.

Put on your epoxy primer. You can use the spray-on type or the type you apply with a paint brush or roller. Be sure to get into the corner with your primer. This is necessary to ready the surface for glazing.

Spray on acrylic-urethane resin. Many home improvement stores will tint this unique product to whatever color you desire. The resin is available in two types--a one-day cure or a three-day cure. Choose the three-day type for the best result. You, of course, have to grant a 72-hour drying time.

Finish with a clear coat by applying polyurethane product to the flooring. This will give your reglazing project durability and a healthy shine.

Maintain with fairly gentle cleaning with products guaranteed not to harm glazed tiles. Mop with mild detergent or gentle foaming cleaner. Always rinse and dry after using cleaner.

Tips & Warnings
Open the windows for ventilation and wear a mask while working with these chemicals especially in small closed in areas. Wearing safety goggles while you work is also advised.

You might try Zep Tile and Grout Cleaner. Just heard about it yesterday from a friend who said as soon as she put it on her tile grout you could see the dirt rise up. Now, I don't know what it would do for your tile, but it is called TILE and grout cleaner. Found at Home Depot in the cleaning supplies. If you try it, let me know how it works.

I have beautiful porcelain tile (made in Turkey) in three rooms but it has developed scratches and a dullness to it over time. How can I get it to look good again plus I'd love to get the wet look I see on other tile? I've tried every product know to man, used steam cleaners, and regular mops to no avail. I got an estimate to have it "cleaned and finished" at the cost of almost $1000 dollars. Please help!
