      Open the box and check to make sure that all components are inside. The box should include the printer, a #94 black ink cartridge, a #95 color ink cartridge, a power chord, an installation CD and the instruction manual. If any parts are missing, put everything back in the box and return it to the store for a replacement.

      Put the installation CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive and wait for the autoplay prompt to appear on the screen. Click the option to run the program and follow the on-screen prompts to install the HP printing software.

      Wait until the software has finished installing. Plug the power cable from the printer to a wall outlet. Attach the USB cable from the printer to an open USB port on your computer.

      Open the plastic top of the Deskjet printer and wait for the printer carriage to slide over to the left. Pull open the printer carriages and snap the black and color ink cartridges into place. Push the carriage covers back down. Close the top of the printer.
