A headband is an excellent way to accessorize a newborn--especially one who may not have been born with much hair. Adding a headband with a large bow on top can add such a fun flair to a newborn baby girl's outfit. Many parents enjoy the fancy look, and a headband is a no-fuss option.

You could spend a lot of money on these headbands in a boutique shop or you could make a few yourself and end up with headbands that match your baby's outfits perfectly. Making headbands for a newborn is a surprisingly simple and fast project.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape Measure Satin Ribbon (3/4-inch wide) Flat elastic (1/4-inch wide) Sewing Machine Sewing Notions (scissors, thread, etc.) Needle
  1. Step 1

Measure the newborn's head from around the forehead to the nape of the neck. Cut a length of elastic this measurement.

  2. Step 2

Cut the ribbon two times longer than the elastic.

  3. Step 3

Lay the ribbon on a work surface with the wrong side facing up. Place the elastic on the ribbon with the elastic at one end of the ribbon. The ribbon is twice as long as the elastic.

  4. Step 4

Fold one long side of the ribbon over the elastic. Fold the other long side over the elastic. Overlap the edges slightly so that only one edge of the ribbon shows. You will not be able to arrange this fold along the entire elastic piece because as you sew, the ribbon gathers along the elastic. Getting the fold arranged at the end of the elastic is sufficient for now.

  5. Step 5

Begin to sew a zig-zag seam along the elastic. You will have to sew slowly and arrange the ribbon around the elastic as you go. You also must pull the elastic taut so that the ribbon gathers as you sew. Remove from the sewing machine when finished.

  6. Step 6

Sew both ends of the headband together with right sides facing each other to make the headband into a circle. Clip excess ribbon and elastic.

  7. Step 7

Embellish the headband if desired. Take another 5-inch piece of ribbon (same color or coordinating) and tie it in a simple bow. Hand stitch the bow slightly off the top center point (either to the right or to the left) of the headband.
