Knitting a scarf is an enjoyable project that can be as fancy or as simple as you wish. If you choose an expensive yarn and an intricate knitting pattern, you can end up with a beautiful scarf. Or, if you are a beginning knitter just learning the basics, make your scarf more simple to begin with.

However you choose to knit your scarf, it is fun to add a fringe to the ends when you are finished knitting. Here is a fast and easy method for adding a quick fringe to finish a knitted scarf.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yarn (match your scarf) Crochet hook Scissors 2-inch-wide cardboard strip (creates 4-inch fringe)

    Knit Fringe on Scarf

  1. Step 1

Wrap the yarn around the width of the cardboard until you have the desired number of fringes for a scarf. The wrapping does not have to be an exact number. Just estimate how many you think you may need. You can always make more if you need them.

Wrap the yarn evenly. Cut off the yarn length when you have the desired number of fringes.

  2. Step 2

Slide the scissors underneath the wrapped yarn, and cut them off by just snipping along the entire length of the cardboard strip. This will provide you with 4-inch-long yarn pieces for the scarf fringe.

  3. Step 3

Take the crochet hook and insert it into a loop on a width edge of the knitted scarf.

  4. Step 4

Take two yarn pieces and fold them in half.

  5. Step 5

Fold the yarn pieces over the inserted crochet hook.

  6. Step 6

Hook the yarn pieces over the crochet hook, and pull the yarn pieces back through the loop in the knitted scarf.

  7. Step 7

Pull the loop of yarn pieces out about an inch or two (enough that you can work with the loop). Grasp the ends of the yarn pieces and insert them through the loop.

  8. Step 8

Pull the ends of the yarn pieces tight to secure the fringe to the knitted scarf.

  9. Step 9

Repeat Steps 3 through 8 to add fringe to both width ends of your knitted scarf.
