Instructions

    • 1

Choose your yarn. The thicker the yarn, the less time it will take to complete your scarf. You will want about 9 oz of yarn for a good-sized scarf with fringe.

    • 2

Choose your needles--the bigger the needles, the looser the stitch. Again, thick yarn and large needles speed up your knitting. Average-sized knitting needles--size 8--will give you a traditional stitch.

    • 3

Knit a sample square to test the gauge. You should be knitting at 4 stitches/inch.

    • 4

Take your skein of yarn and wind it into a yarn ball before you start to knit.

    • 5

Make a slip knot. Cast on 26 stitches.

    • 6

Knit one, and purl the rest of the row.

    • 7

Purl one, and knit the rest of the row.

    • 8

Alternate knit one purl row, then purl one knit row for the rest of the scarf. It should measure around 60 inches long.

    • 9

Cast off the last row before starting the fringe.

    • 10

Create the fringe. Cut a piece of cardboard the same length as the end of the scarf, and as wide as you want the finished length of the fringe to be. Wrap the yarn lengthwise around the cardboard about 60 times.

    • 11

Cut the yarn on one side of the cardboard in a straight line. You should have fringe that is double the length of the fringe you will end up with when you're finished.

    • 12

Take a stitch from one end of the scarf. With a crochet hook, pull open the stitch.

    • 13

Fold a piece of fringe over so it forms a loop at the top. Using the hook, pull the piece of fringe through the open stitch so it leaves a loop of fringe on the other side of the stitch.

    • 14

Pull the loose ends of the piece of fringe through the loop to create a slip knot. Pull closed. That's one piece of fringe attached to your scarf. Repeat this process to attach fringe to the end, or ends, of your scarf.
