How to Keep Smoked Gouda Fresh

Save

Keeping cheese fresh and free of molding or drying out can be a challenge since each cheese has a different moisture level. Cheeses like smoked gouda have a higher moisture content and can lose their flavor if they dry out. If the cheese is left in the wrapper it came in from the supermarket, smoked gouda can mold. Since cheese contains actual living cultures, it is important to allow those enzymes to survive so the freshness of the gouda is preserved.

Things You'll Need

  • Wax paper Parchment paper Rubber band Tape
  • Ensure your fridge is set on 35 to 42 degrees. The cheese and meat drawer should be set on a high humidity setting if your fridge allows you to do so.

  • Remove the plastic wrap the cheese came in from the market.

  • Replace this wrap with wax or parchment paper. Secure with a piece of tape or rubber band.

  • Mark with a permanent pen on the outside of the wax paper. Write the expiration date.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never eat cheese that has mold on it. Discard and purchase new cheese.
