Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Iron-on transfers letters Iron-on transfer flowers Iron-on transfer numbers Printable transfer paper 18 inches of ½-inch wide silver ribbon Fabric glue Hot glue gun Silver sequins Clear flat-back crystals

    Customize Your Sweatshirt

  1. Step 1

Designing your own sweatshirt can be fun and easy. This sweatshirt can be designed with or without the use of a computer. You should first begin with a trip to your local crafting store. At the store you can find iron-on transfers such as letters, flowers and numbers. You should also be able to find printable transfer paper that will allow you to print an image on iron-transfer paper. For the sake of this tutorial, I suggest you visit your local Hobby Lobby or Joann's Fabric Store.

  2. Step 2

While at the store, depending on whether you will create a computerized transfer or use pre-made transfers, pick up the transfer paper for dark fabric. Also pick up pre-made letter and number transfers as well as floral cutout transfers to use if you will not be using computerized transfers. You can add some personality to your sweatshirt by picking up 18 inches of ½-inch wide silver ribbon, fabric glue, hot glue gun, silver sequins and clear flat-back crystals. You can even pick up plain, dark-colored sweatshirts at Joann's.

  3. Step 3

Once you are home, follow the printing directions if you will be using an image from your computer. You can use a picture of yourself or any other image that suits your fancy. If you will be using pre-printed iron-on transfers, use the letters to create the words on the back of your sweatshirt as well as any numerical information you would like (for example, sports team number). You can also utilize pre-printed flower iron-on transfers on the front of your sweatshirt. For the sake of the tutorial, I suggest placing three in front in varying sizes, with the largest in the middle.

  4. Step 4

You can customize your sweatshirt by cutting the neckline out to create an off-the-shoulder look. Measure 1 inch below the area you cut and evenly space 4 vertical cuts where you can weave ribbon through. Begin weaving the ribbon from the inside of the shirt out. First make sure to glue one end of the ribbon to the side seam. Weave ribbon from the inside of the hole and down into the second hole and repeat for the last two sections. Make sure to glue the last end to the inside of the side seam and cut off any extra ribbon.

  5. Step 5

There should be 3 blank sections between the ribbon where you can hot glue a layer of sequins and then a flat-back crystal on top. Repeat this process for each successive area. Leave the shirt to dry for at least 24 hours.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you keep your work area clear and neat in order to keep your sweatshirt from being damaged.
  • Practice safety while using the hot glue gun. This machine can cause serious burns. Keep it away from your skin and children.
