How to Make Your Own Mario Hat

Dress Like Mario

Mario is a character in many popular video games from the Nintendo game system. Mario was first created by Shigeru Miyamoto, a video game designer who also created Donkey Kong and The Legend of Zelda. Mario is best known as an Italian brother with a brother named Luigi, and he has been a popular Halloween costume character since the '80s. The signature Mario costume is red overalls paired with a puffy, red baseball hat with the letter M on it. Even without the overalls, the hat is an iconic symbol of Mario and popular video game culture. To make your own Mario hat, all you need is a second-hand red hat and a little imagination.

Things You'll Need

• Large red baseball cap White felt Hot glue Scissors Marker Thin cardboard Computer with a printer Tissue paper

Instructions

Directions

1. Print a photo of the white Mario logo about 2 inches by 2 inches on your computer. Check the "Resources" section below for reference pictures.

2. Cut the outline of the logo out of the paper, leaving the white paper and the outline of the Mario logo. Lay the paper outline onto the cardboard and trace the outline onto the cardboard with a marker.

3. Cut around the perimeter of the logo out of the cardboard, making a stencil. Place the cardboard stencil onto the white felt and trace the outline with a marker. Cut out the logo with scissors.

4. Spread hot glue on the back of the felt and press the felt logo firmly on the center of the hat. Let the hot glue dry for about 20 minutes.

5. Stuff the tissue paper into the top of the large, red baseball hat. Preferably, the hat should be much larger than your head to create an oversized, overstuffed look.

Tips & Warnings

• Pair the hat with red overalls and a plunger for a quick Halloween costume.

• Keep hot glue and scissors out of the reach of children.
