DVD drives that have recording capabilities (DVD-RW) are commonly referred to as "burners." This type of DVD drive can be used to create recordings, copies or to back up data. Turn off and unplug your computer. Place it in an area that has good lighting and room to work.

Touch a metal object to release any static electricity from your body. Check to see if screws are holding the computer cover in place. Remove the cover from the computer.

    • 3

Remove any screws holding the old DVD drive in place. Push the drive a little out of the front of the case. Make note of and then remove any cables connected to it.

    • 4

Read the manual accompanying the DVD drive for any special instructions. Take the new computer DVD drive out of the packaging.

    • 5

Set the jumper settings on the back of the DVD drive the same as the old one. Use tweezers, if necessary to do this.

    • 6

Gently glide the new DVD drive into the open slot. Replace the cables on the back of the drive. Push the drive back until it is even with the computer case.

    • 7

Replace the screws to hold the DVD drive in place. Replace the computer cover. Plug the computer into a power source.

    • 9

Run any software that came with the DVD drive. This may include added features or utilities for the new computer drive.

    • 10

Verify that your computer recognizes the replaced DVD drive. Click on "My Computer." The new DVD drive should be listed.
