Your windshield wipers can easily be forgotten until you need them. On occasion you should check to make sure your complete windshield wiper is in top operating condition. If replacement windshield wipers are needed for your Dodge Dakota, you can easily do this installation yourself with pliers or a vise-grip.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pliers or vise-grip New windshield wipers
  1. Step 1

Note your vehicle model and year. Go to your local auto store and give the store clerk your vehicle model and year in order to buy replacement wipers to install on the windshield wiper arm. Time and weather can cause the rubber blade to become frayed and detached and this can cause the blade to malfunction and possibly the steel windshield wiper structured bow to scrape your windshield.

  2. Step 2

Grab the windshield wiper arm and pivot it into the "up" position. At the articulation point use your pliers to squeeze the small tab in and pop off the old windshield wiper.

  3. Step 3

Use your pliers to attach the new windshield wiper to the tab at the articulation point on the windshield wiper arm.

  4. Step 4

Pivot the windshield wipers back to there standard down position after they are attached.

Tips & Warnings
  • The tension spring in the arm has become worn out if the arm will no longer move the windshield wiper back and forth. If this is the problem, purchase a new windshield wiper arm from your local auto store (have your vehicle model and year ready for them) and install it by removing the old wiper arm that is held on by a single retaining nut under the base of the windshield. Where the windshield wiper arm attaches to your vehicle via a retaining nut can become loose and will not allow the windshield wiper to move back and forth. Fix this by putting the wiper in the standard down position and then use your pliers or vise-grip to tighten the loose nut.
