File taxes online free

Many people are beginning to file taxes online, and most don't realize that you can file taxes online for free. In years past, to file taxes online you had to purchase tax software, which often was cheaper and easier than going to a tax professional to file your tax return. More and more companies are offering free basic tax filing services. To upgrade to more complicated tax forms and situations do sometimes charge a small fee, but still is often more affordable than a tax professional. Here's how you can file taxes online for free!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The IRS official website, at www.irs.gov has a link for freefile, which will guide you through the free tax preparation process. Click "I will choose a company" once you have clicked the freefile link on the IRS website to choose where you will file taxes online free.

  2. Step 2

Go through the links until you are comfortable that the website offered includes your state and your tax situation. Turbotax and H & R Block are both featured on this page and are easy to use and free for their basic services. You may access either on their own website, as well.

  3. Step 3

Gather all necessary tax documents to have at hand to file your taxes online free. You will need you and your dependents social security numbers, all W2s for employment for the year, documents concerning interest earned for starters. Your tax preparation website will prompt you with questions for more complicated tax situations.

  4. Step 4

Choose whether you will be receiving your tax refund on a paper check or direct deposited into a bank account. Generally, a tax refund with direct deposit will be available to you faster than a paper check.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always read through the fine print to ensure that your tax filing is actually free and you don't stumble upon hidden charges.
