Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Apple Macintosh notebook computer
  1. Step 1

Press the power button. A window will appear asking, "Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now?" You can choose between Restart, Sleep, or Shut Down. If you choose "Restart," your Mac laptop will reboot automatically. You can also click "Shut Down" to turn the computer off completely. Turning it back on once it has shut down will initiate the reboot.

  2. Step 2

Click on the Apple Menu once. The Apple Menu is located in upper left corner of your computer screen and is represented by the Apple logo. Select "Restart" from the drop-down menu to reboot. If you want to shut down your Mac you can do so from the Apple Menu also.

  3. Step 3

Hold down the power button for ten seconds in the event your Mac freezes up and is unresponsive. If your notebook is still unresponsive, holding down the power button for ten seconds will turn off the computer.

  4. Step 4

Check to see if an open application is not responding and causing the hangup. Press "Command," "Option" and "ESC" to open the Force Quit Applications window. If something shows it is "Not Responding," highlight it and click "Force Quit." This may be enough to unfreeze your Mac.
