Do you need to wipe your computer clean and start from scratch? Is your hard drive so cluttered with junk that you just want an easy way to get rid of it all? Well formatting an exisiting hard drive is probably the best way to make your computer feel new again.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Windows XP Disk
  • Computer /w Hard drive
  1. Step 1

First thing to do is back up all your data on your hard drive. Now, this may not be possible if you got a BSOD(Blue screen of death). If you can't access the hard drive the way you normally do, you can still probably get your data off but you will have to slave it.

  2. Step 2

Once you have backed up your data, you now want to find your Windows XP disk and put it in. Make sure you know your Windows XP cd key before hand, or you won't be able to use your new install and might as well not even reformat.

  3. Step 3

Now do a restart or turn the computer on. You need to access the boot menu. This is usually f10 or f12 but it should say somewhere on the logo start up screen.

  4. Step 4

Once you are into the boot menu choose Cd Drive(something like that).

It will start the boot process. Give it time.

  5. Step 5

Once you get to the first options, you will want to accept the terms, which is F8 I believe. Do not repair, so hit escape. Now you want to delete the partition! Delete the biggest partition usually, I can't really go into much detail here because you could have two hard drives, ect. Just use your head.

  6. Step 6

After you delete your main partition you will want to recreate the partition. Format it usuaing NTFS and A quick install will do.

  7. Step 7

Now that is basically all there is too it. You will just continue to follow the on screen directions! After you get all finish you will need to either use the disk that came with your computer or go to the computer's website and download the drivers.
