Hot flashes can occur as a side effect to medications such as antidepressants. They are most well known, however, as being a sign of menopause. Menopause is when an women begins to cease menstruating and being able to have children. Hot flashes are not life threatening, but they can make a person very uncomfortable. If you are suffering from hot flashes, there are a few things you can do to get rid of them.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Water
  • Soy products
  • Estrogen supplements
  • Vitamin E
  1. Step 1

Drink at least eight glasses of water per day. Water keeps you cool from the inside out. This will help keep your hot flashes to a minimum.

  2. Step 2

Quit smoking and drinking alcohol. These can make you feel hot and can contribute to your hot flashes.

  3. Step 3

Start eating soy foods or drinking soy milk. Soy products actually help get rid of hot flashes.

  4. Step 4

Get rid of stress through exercise, yoga or daily Bible readings. Stress intensifies hot flashes, so by eliminating stress, you can decrease the number of hot flashes you have as well as how long the hot flashes last.

  5. Step 5

Take an estrogen supplement. You can get these at many pharmacies or health stores. When your estrogen levels are where they are supposed to be, then you won't be experiencing hot flashes very often.

  6. Step 6

Keep cool. This will help keep you comfortable during a hot flash. Make sure you wear cotton, loose-fitting clothing. Use a fan or air conditioner to keep cool in the summer.

  7. Step 7

Vitamin E is known for reducing the number of hot flashes a person has. You will need to take it twice per day if your doctor permits. Vitamin E can thin your blood, so secure your doctor's permission before taking it.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you keep a journal of what you eat and when your hot flashes occur, you may be able to identify some foods that are triggering your hot flashes. You can then eliminate them from your diet. Take some cold showers. This will help you get over your hot flash faster.
