How to Format a Dell Laptop

Formatting is used to erase all data from a hard drive. Formats are normally used when reinstalling an operating system or cleaning a drive after a virus infection. Formatting can make your hard drive run like new. A Dell laptop can be formatted in as little as 30 minutes. The process may take up to an hour and a half, depending on the size of the drive. By formatting your Dell laptop, you may be able to solve various system problems that have developed over time.

Things You'll Need:

• Dell restore disk or operating system disk

1. Back up all data before performing the format.

2. Insert your disk and restart the computer.

3. Strike any key when prompted to begin running the disk. If you are not prompted, you will need to restart and hit "F12" when your computer boots. This will allow you to choose "Boot from CD-ROM" from a short menu.

4. Choose between installing or reinstalling your operating system and repairing your current installation. An installation or reinstallation takes you through both the format and installation. Repairing takes you to a DOS prompt. You will need to use FDisk to format your drive. You will also need to know each drive letter on your hard drive. This option is only for users with multiple partitions needing to format only part of the drive.

5. Choose "Full NTFS" format if you choose to reinstall the operating system.

• The easiest format option is the installation or reinstallation option. The process is easier to understand for most users.
• Never format your Dell laptop while on battery power. If the battery dies during the format, you could ruin your hard drive.
