A lot of times, when people are depressed, people tell them to "just get over it." The thing is, although it's not that simple, there are ways that you can get over depression. It doesn't have to be a life sentence.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

One of the first steps you need to take to get over depression is to find a GOOD therapist. Cognitive behavioral therapist can be very effective, because they don't encourage you to dwell on the past, but rather, focus on how you can change your thinking patterns NOW.

  2. Step 2

Next, make sure you are exercising. Studies show that moderate exercise everyday for about 30 minutes is as effective as taking an antidepressant pill. It can be very difficult to start an exercise program when you are depressed. Take it, literally, one step at a time by going for short walks and building up to longer ones. Your body will release endorphins instantly with exercise, so it's one of the fastest ways to get over depression.

  3. Step 3

To get over depression, get the junk out of your diet. Eat only whole foods, and don't self-medicate and overeat, because that will slow you down and make you feel bloated and even more depressed.

  4. Step 4

Take a good multivitamin as well. It is important to give your body all the tools possible in order to get over depression.

  5. Step 5

If the depression is persistent, see a doctor. Antidepressants are very effective for some people. Sometimes, a person will need to try different antidepressants to see which one is the most effective at helping them get over depression.

  6. Step 6

Deliberately try to change the way you think. If you catch negative thoughts in your head, replace them with positive ones. Surround yourself with positive affirmations and quotes. Say them out loud. The power of speaking positive words cannot be overestimated.

  7. Step 7

Do not avoid your friends. Isolating yourself can make depression worse.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember, one step at a time.
  • Keep in mind that the bad feelings will pass.
  • If you feel suicidal, call a hotline. Suicidal feelings pass.
