Breastfeeding your baby should be a rewarding bonding experience. But a jealous toddler can make breastfeeding stressful. Planning ahead to keep your toddler entertained while you breastfeed your baby can make the situation easier for everyone.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make sure your toddler's basic needs are met before you begin breastfeeding your baby. Make sure she doesn't have to go to the potty, need a drink, or need a snack. This will prevent interruptions for these things once you have started breastfeeding.

  2. Step 2

Enlist your toddler's help with breastfeeding. Ask her to bring a burp rag, the nursing pillow, or other supplies you may need. You can also have her sing a song to the baby or gently rub the baby's head.

  3. Step 3

Create a special nook for your toddler near the spot that you breastfeed the baby. Your toddler can curl up in her special spot with some toys or books. She'll be near you but will feel special since she has her own spot.

  4. Step 4

Put together an activity bag or basket. Put in several activities your toddler can do on her own while you breastfeed the baby. Only get this bag or basket out during breastfeeding. Make sure to change items in the bag frequently so your toddler won't get bored.

  5. Step 5

Sing with your toddler while you breastfeed the baby. Your toddler can act out the songs, sing along, or just listen quietly. You can also tell stories or nursery rhymes. If your child enjoys finger puppets, try telling a story while your toddler acts it out with the finger puppets.

  6. Step 6

Offer your toddler a snack while you breastfeed the baby. This will keep her occupied for at least part of the time.

Tips & Warnings
  • Explain to your toddler why she needs to allow you to breastfeed the baby without being interrupted.
  • Expect jealousy on the part of your toddler while you're breastfeeding. She will no longer have your full attention and may try to get it by acting out.
