Instructions

    • 1

Interview the company president or executives to determine the company's business philosophy. A good logo might not necessarily reflect that philosophy, but it shouldn't contradict it. For example, if the business has conservative principles, the logo should not be flashy or have crude elements.

    • 2

Talk to the marketing department to get a good idea of the principle selling elements of the business's products. The logo must convey a sense of the values of those products. In this way, the logo sends a message consistent with the product.

    • 3

Decide on a basic shape of the logo and whether it's going to be fashionably shaped words or an image. For example, the words Faster Transport might appeal to the marketing department of a transportation company, while the image of a planet covered with water might appeal to a company involved with global warming issues.

    • 4

Take the basic design and come up with seven preliminary designs. These are preliminary sketch designs that will help company executives narrow down the choices of what they want.

    • 5

Review the sketch designs with the company executives and narrow down the field to two or three preliminary logos.

    • 6

Use graphics design software such as Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW to transfer your design from the sketches to a computer graphic file. Fill in the details of the two or three preliminary logos that the client selected. Create several additional variations with simple changes in color. Print high quality pictures of the files.

    • 7

Present the final logo design pictures to the clients. Although not everyone needs to agree, there should be consensus among the group. Give them the file on a flash drive.

Tips & Warnings

  • Words that are tilted forward give the impression of motion and speed.
