How to Choose Which Perfume to Wear

Find your perfect perfume.

Perfume smells good, boosts the wearer's confidence and attracts members of the opposite sex. It can also invoke pleasant memories. Smells can bring back memories from childhood, according to Maria Larsson at the Centre for Advanced Study. Our preferences for different smells may be based on our past experiences. Whatever the reason, the key to finding the perfect scent is experimentation.

Instructions

1. Decide what you want your perfume to say about you. If you want to be sexy and sultry, choose a perfume that has more of a musky smell. If you want to be cheerful and dainty, choose a light, floral-scented perfume. These are just guidelines and not strict rules. What is most important is to choose a scent that you like.

2. Bring your boyfriend or husband with you when perfume shopping to get his opinion on perfume scents. After all, this is the person you are trying to impress. (Some men, however, aren't too much fun to take shopping. If you have a man who hates shopping, you might want to leave him at home and surprise him with your new perfume instead.)

3. Smell different brands of perfume to find which one you like. When you are shopping for perfume, don't test the scents on your own skin, because the different brands of perfume will mix and accumulate on your skin. Instead spray the perfume on a tester stick, which most perfume stores provide. If the store does not have a tester stick, spray the perfume into the air to smell it.

4. Evaluate each perfume for scent and allergic reaction. If the perfume causes an allergic reaction, it doesn't matter if it smells good. If the scent causes your nose or eyes to itch or burn, it is obviously not a viable choice.

5. Once you have found the perfume scent you like best, spray it directly on your skin. Perfume reacts with a person's body chemistry. Each brand of perfume will smell slightly different on each individual. Test the perfume on your skin before you buy it, to make sure it smells good on you.
