Here's how to make homemade ham and bean soup from scratch.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First you will need to soak your beans over night. You can use pinto beans, white beans, black beans, pink beans or a mixture of your choice. Soak them in cold water, changing the water if you get the chance to, but it's not completely nessesary. Just make sure there's twice as much water as beans, or more.

  2. Step 2

The next day, simmer the beans in plenty of plain water for a few hours, till they start to get soft. Now refrigerate them over night again. This is long and boring, but your beans are going to be hard and nasty if you don't.

  3. Step 3

Ok, now you can make your soup. Put your beans in fresh water in a large pot. Add chopped cooked ham, chopped celery, onions, garlic and carrots, and an equal amount of beef and chicken bullion cubes, depending on taste and how much water your using. Add a couple teaspoons of cumin. Simmer till the beans and vegetables are soft, for an hour or two.
