How to identify a comma splice and how to fix it

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a piece of writing
  • a pen or computer
  1. Step 1

First, you need to know what a comma splice is. A comma splice is when two sentences are combined by a comma. For example: I went to the store, i was hungry.

This is how to fix it.

  2. Step 2

A comma is used to seperate dependant clauses (fragments, not full sentences) (For example: I went to the store, scared that I would not have enough money)

If you have two complete senteces and you want to link them together, use a semicolon

  3. Step 3

Use a semicolon instead of a comma. The only time you should use a comma with two complete sentences is when you use a conjunction (and, but, or)

EXAMPLE: I went to the store, and I was so hungry I couldn't think straight.

  4. Step 4

So, remember to use a semicolon to seperate two sentences instead of a comma.

EXAMPLE I am hungry; I need to eat some food.
